first time smoke... tips? tricks? info?

ive got this grill (see link) and am preparing to smoke a pork shoulder for my first time on it. im still not sure which side i need the heat, should it be near the vent or away from it? im also wondering if someone could tell me a good amount of charcoal to use to get an even 200 F or so temp. any info would be appreciated, thanks.
