Making a compound butter is pretty simple - cut as much butter as you need/want into small pieces, let it soften a bit (not melted, but soft so you can mix things into it), then mix in whatever you like, put it on some wax paper and roll it up, pop it in the fridge until it hardens again, slice and use.
I like to mix in a clove of smashed garlic into some butter and use that to top steaks - very tasty.
