Does anyone make a gas grill using ceramic briquet

I have a gas grill that I can't get parts for anymore, so I have to replace it. While out shopping yesterday, I could not find a grill that used ceramic briquettes or even lava rock. They all have sheet metal "heat distribution plates," instead. My first gas grill had a grate and ceramic briquettes that made a complete layer side to side and front to back. The second, the one I am replacing now, has a metal plate that has a single row of briquettes going from side to side over the long rows of the oval burner (front and back). I've soon noticed that the older grill with the complete layer had more even heat (I'm sorry now that I ever got rid of it). It seems to me that a grill without any briquettes is going to be even worse.
