Piercing Steak

I saw a show on a ribeye steak cookoff somewhere in Ark.
The team that had won reserve several years in a row
pierced their steaks all over with a multiprong ice pick before marinading.
I thought piercing was not advisable, but it seemed to work for these guys.

Anyone ever try this? John
