Conversion of a Meco #5030

So I picked up this nice stainless charcoal water smoker made by Meco, and then I bought the heating element and controller for the electric model.

I realize that electric smoking might get smoke in the eyes of the purists, but I wonder if anyone has ever done this conversion and can offer me any pointers.

I'm going to have to do one of two things: either I have to cut a hole in the wall of the smoker to fit the rectangular connector to the element and fabricate a cover for the hole when I want to use charcoal, or I can poke the connector through one of the two sliding fill doors and fabricate a cover for the part that will remain open while smoking.

Any ideas?
