What a timely post - I just read an article today about the banning of BBQ grills on decks and patios in San DIego (possibly California).
the key is the type of deck or patio - the use of grills is banned only on those made of wood, IOW, those decks and patios that can catch fire.
I think it is the same sort of thing here.
Do you want to maintain a fire/high heat source in untrimmed foliage or on a dry lawn? probably not.
Is it possible/likely that if you smoke all day in the middle of your Zoysia grass lawn you will kill the grass underneath? Could be.
Prepare an area where you will grill/smoke. No branches overhead either - not only can these be set alight, but birds alighting therein could poop on your food.
