Beer can chicken is a recipe for roasting chicken held in a single position.
While traditionally, one can "roast" over an open flame, that technique requires turning the meat so that all sides get the benefit of the heat.
You cannot turn a beer can chicken, therefore one must create an "oven" to roast it in.
