I believe the cast iron will hold heat longer and leave those black marks better. The burner heat does the searing, and while the racks add a little it doesn't make a lot of difference.

I do urge you to cover the grill and put it under roof if possible to add years to it's life. Leaving one out in the open uncovered shortens it's usefulness.
