After cooking, I crank up it up to maximum heat with the lid closed and wait until there is little or no smoke, and then use a brush on the grates. They don't stay shiny, but they are clean. Before the next cook, as the grill pre-heats, I sometimes hit the grates with a brush again, but the most important thing to do is to rub the grates down with oil. I dip the top of an onion in a small bowl of vegetable oil and rub the grates with the onion top while holding it with tongs. Ciao, John
