I'm a newly converted charcoal user and I can't get a good sear on my steaks. I used the recommended 50 briquettes of Kingsford cooked in the Weber chimney starter until lightly ashed and it wasn't even hot enough to make grill marks. Top and bottom vents open and lid was on with the coals in place for 10 min before I put the steaks on. I also tried two chimney starters full of lump mesquite charcoal started in the kettle with some Weber starting cubes till lightly ashed with the lid open with the same result.
