Cornfed,

I have a cast iron grill very similar to the Lodge Sportsman at an extremely reasonable price (end of summer clearance = $20). That (extremely heavy) little grill won me one backyard grilling contest so I have a lot of respect for it but...(and you might laugh)...

Find a large porcelain coated corn pot (thrift store cost approx $5), and get a 15" diameter grilling rack and you're pretty much good to go. 'Accessorize' it with an 8" diameter cake cooling rack as a fuel grid (thrift store cost approx $1), a coffee can to move lit spare coals into (for heat control - pick it out of the neighbors trash if ya ain't got one around the house), and a set of tongs to transfer the coals back and forth from the coffee can as temperature requires. Your back and your wallet will thank you - however you may actually need a sense of humor to use this rig in such a public venue as a tailgate. I've already sworn that when I do my next BBQ cookoff that the cast iron will stay home in favor of the porcelain pot for finishing my ribs and chicken. (FYI - don't forget the lid to snuff out your coals).

Backing over this rig in the driveway will set you back little more than five bucks. Heck, if you manipulated things just right, your friends at the tailgate might want to spare you of any future embarrassment and pass the hat to take up a collection and get you that nifty Lodge grill.
