I recommend an 8" slab of concrete under the BBQ island itself. Try and stick with the blocks if you can, even if you have to tear out the concrete. The home depot backer board islands are flimsily and hollow sounding. They are not built to last several years.
I am getting the 52" unit installed in a 12' long lsland, the quality of build and material (304 SS) of construction is good.
