Want a Weber but...

Comparing Weber and Vermont Castings. I don't mind spending a bit more and gettnig a Weber BUT why does Weber put the controls up on the right side meaning you have no working surface there? Being right handed it seems dumb to use up your right hand area for controls rather than a usable surface for setting things. Any thoughts on this? Do folks find that not having a right hand work area a pain? Any advantages to having it there?
