Check into the Weber Summit Silver C. It's not super premium. However it has a dedicated smoker burner - 8K BTU and goes for ~$1,100. The grill gets to 650 - 700 on the lid thermo. Drop your water soaked hickory or mesquite in (chunks, not chips - the dedicated burner eats chips way to quickly). Wait for the first hint of smoke, drop the smoker burner to low, wait another minute or two, then drop your meat on. Does it taste smokey like BBQ? No, but if you've got several large chunks of wood, it will smoke like you won't believe and the meat will absorb some smoke flavor. Fattier steaks like rib-eye seem to absorb the smoke better; maybe because the fat isn't as dense? Don't let folks kid you; the Weber will flare if you leave the heat up. Maybe not as much as others due to the excellent drainage system, but enough to add flavor. You can also reasonably slow cook. Running the smoker burner on low and the far right burner on low gave me 250 on the lid thermo. If you run the smoker burner on low with Wood Chunks, you still have to add wood occasionally on a long cook, but its a better alternative than foil pouches or boxes you set on the flame tamers. Spring for $200 more dollars and you get an IR back burner and rotiss apparatus.
