I believe from what I have learned from butchers in different parts of the country that it is the exact same animal. KC or NY is an attempt at marketing. Probably could call it a San Fran Steak if ya wanted but, it would be dressed in a Studded Leather collar :)
I'm not 100% on the unscientific research that I have done but, it seems to look, cook, taste and be cut the same no matter what it is called.
