I haven't tried it, but my goal is to have a perfect med-rare, and I'd think that's the intent of their resting period. The two biggest factors I've found are 1) Letting the steak (or tri-tip!) come to room temperature before grilling 2) Letting meat rest after cooking.
If you do those two things and don't overcook it, I think the resting period wouldn't be necessary...well, it never has been for me anyway.
