Coals and things

Okay, here is the crux of the question. On occasion I cook on my little smokey joe while out in the middle of no where. I use lump as the fuel. What is the best way to extinguish the coals or get rid of them altogether when there really aint nothing to do with them?

Up until now I have simply sat and waited for the coals to burn into nothing and then dump the ashes in a shallow grave and pour some water on and then kick dirt over the small hole. Does anyone have any suggestions about how to dispose of coals or any other ideas?
