Choosing a charcoal grill

It's time for me to upgrade from my cheap charcoal grill to something that gives me better fire control. The 22.5" Weber kettle seems to be the standard, but I'm wondering what other folks recommend. In playing with the Weber at the store it seems like having to completely remove the lid and find a place to set it down would be a pain. Is there a kettle at the quality level of the Weber but with a hinged lid? What features should I be looking for in a grill?
